This rather pretentious building symbolized the rapidity with which the mining camp took on an air of permanence. Yet the frontier atmosphere had not disappeared by any means. For example, the population was still male-oriented with men outnumbering women about two to one. Note that everyone on the street appears to be male and that both of the stores shown dealt in men's clothing. Note also that the streets were as yet unpaved and water and sanitation facilities were virtually non-existent.
