Throughout the period, Winnipeg's commercial elite prospered, establishing wholesale outlets, banks, grocery stores, wholesale companies, and so on. This photograph of the Redwood Brewery on North Main was taken in 1882. It was set up in the city in 1877 by E.L. Drewery and supplied ales, porter, and lager to points all across the North West. Drewery was a typical member of Winnipeg's commercial elite. He served as president of the Winnipeg Hospital Board, chairman of the Union Bank of Canada, chairman of the Winnipeg Parks Board, alderman in 1883-1884, M.L.A. in 1886-1888, and as president of the Board of Trade in 1899. He was a Conservative and an Anglican and belonged to the Manitoba, Commercial, Adanac, and St. Charles Country Clubs. He was also a golfing and boating enthusiast.
