For tens of thousands of immigrants, this was the first view of Winnipeg. This station was built between 1882 and 1884 and lasted until 1903. The running of the C.P.R. main line through Winnipeg and the construction of the company's shops and yards in the city were responsible for cutting the North End off from the rest of the city. One Winnipegger noted in 1912 that the level railway crossing intersecting Main Street made the North End "practically a district apart from the city".
