"Light-Tower Near Cobourg, Lake Ontario" W.H. Bartlett.
This engraving from a drawing made in 1838 shows a steamer coming west along the north shore of Lake Ontario. The light-tower stood on a rock two miles off shore between Cobourg and Port Hope. Even for immigrants who had spent six weeks in the North Atlantic, the movement of the steamer in the choppy waves of Lake Ontario could be an uncomfortable experience.
