From Quebec most immigrants continued on to Montreal by steamer. Here the steamer Montreal moves upstream with Mount Royal looming in the background. The date is about 1850. This steamer's service ended in fire on June 28, 1856. She was carrying 500 Scottish immigrants, and 253 bodies were taken from the river when she sank. Normally the steamer took between twenty and thirty hours to go from Quebec to Montreal. The fare was approximately $1.00 per adult and immigrants were advised to prepare their own meat and to obtain bread before boarding.
