Wampum was frequently woven into belts. Most that survive are much smaller than this example, usually being only twelve (or fewer) rows wide. This belt relates also to the founding of the Confederacy. The central figure represents the Onondaga and possibly also the Tree of Peace planted by Deganawida. The four squares represent the other four nations of the Confederacy. Wampum belts were exchanged during diplomatic negotiations. Slide 25 depicts the Mohawk Chief Hendrick with a belt he carried to London in 1710.
