Charlie Lake Cave Site before Excavation (Peace River District).
Over 4 m of cultural deposits lie beneath the person and record 10,500 years of human habitation. At the time of the oldest occupation the sandstone outcrops, which are now nearly buried by accumulated sediments, would have been standing exposed, probably overlooking a narrow arm of glacial Lake Peace. Prehistoric hunters may have hidden among the sandstone outcrops to intercept bison crossing the lake. A number of large bison bones were found with a fluted spearhead and a few other stone artifacts in the oldest level. The cave itself, which now enters the sandstone outcrop to the right of the figure, may not yet have been formed when the early bison hunters used the area.
