Plateau baking ovens were used to prepare wild crops, like balsam root, obtained in large quantities in upland meadows in early summer. In this excavated oven note the fire cracked rocks, charcoal and heat-coloured sediments in and around the pit. The inset shows a balsam-root plant in full bloom.
