This example of a fortified village, found on the north coast, is representative of a wide range of defensive sites used all along the coast in early historical times. Some fortifications on the south coast, with earthen ditches and embankments, are known to date back at least a thousand years. The Kitwanga hill-fort had elaborate defenses, including spiked logs suspended from the palisade ready to be dropped on attackers trying to ascend the steep hillside.
