One seemingly endless labour connected with the fur trade was collecting wood for heating and cooking. For newly-established posts in forested areas this was not much of a problem, but for older posts, those on Hudson Bay and those on some prairie rivers a sufficient supply of wood was a critical problem. Wood was stockpiled during the spring and fall. Usually firewood was transported on wooden sleds like the one above. These employees at York Factory are warmly dressed against the cold. The dogs were used to assist the men in moving the sled.
