Beginning in 1825 or thereabouts, a relatively luxurious item entered rural homes: the clock with a cover or case. The makers, Montrealers like the Twiss brothers and Bellamy, inhabitants of Richelieu like the Paradis family of Saint-Antoine, or inhabitants of Three Rivers or Nicolet like the Bellerose family, produced this type of clock with movements made of wood (maple, cherry) or of metal in a box of pine or walnut, often dyed to imitate mahogany and rosewood. Doubtless they were the pride of more than one of the "salons" which began at that time to be furnished in a British manner.
