Chairs such as these, and the rocker that follows, were basic furniture for the typical household in the counties of Bellechasse, Dorchester and Beauce, from the end of the 19th century to 1926. Most of them came from the shop of Salomon Denault "known as Luneau" chair-maker and pedlar at Saint-Raphael de Bellechasse. They were selling for 25 cents each around 1925, while the rocker was worth up to 51.50. Very comfortable because of the wide curved slats (voliches) of the back, they belong technically to the traditional chairs of Quebec but show a stylistic borrowing from the Maritime Provinces (ox-yoke-back Windsor).
