Profusely decorated with leaves, with stripes, and with rope-like moulding, this little chest is decorated on four surfaces with a rosette design with four petals and, on the back, with a stylized leaf flanked by two hearts aflame. The fact that the parts are put together with ordinary nails and that the festoons are artlessly arranged on the feet suggests its domestic manufacture.
The total effect is symmetrical and well-proportioned. This little chest might have been used to keep papers, jewels, and the small souvenirs of the bride. It will never be known whether it was made by the father or the fiance. A red dye, imitating precious woods, enhances the appearance.
