Curved chest with three drawers, in wild cherry wood with rounded panelled uprights and curved feet. The bronze ornaments and the key-hole escutcheons are not original. This specimen illustrates very well the extremely high quality and the ability of several generations of carpenter-joiners who, especially from the middle of the 18th century to the first quarter of the 19th century, evidenced an original flair for design. Furniture such as this, from the workshop and no longer of domestic manufacture, indicates the presence of a bourgeosie and of a minor urban nobility which had recourse for meeting its needs to fashionable goldsmiths, painters, and cabinet-makers.
One can imagine that a person of some distinction, a dealer in furs or lumber, seigneur or a rich farmer, might have endowed his daughter with an outstanding and expensive piece of furniture with a "worked" facade, in beautiful maple or "Wood of the West Indies" often completed with a marble top.
