The Second World War exacted costs from practically every sector of society. For those at home who may have been grumbling about the inactivity of the Canadian army, wages, or the shortage of consumer goods, the severe Canadian losses at Dieppe brought home the realization that the country was truly at war and that everyone was required to make some sacrifice.
Cartoonist John A. Collins drew this cluster of complainers against the backdrop of the casualty list from Dieppe. The cartoon appeared on the front page of the MontrΘal Gazette on 26 August 1942, one week after the disastrous raid.
