This student's bedroom had a ceramic ewer and basin on a marble-topped washstand with towels conveniently on a rail at the back. Marble tops were practical because splashes did not harm them. The edge of a cupboard door is just visible below the drawer. The chamber pot was kept in the cup-board and usually matched the ewer and basin, as did a soap dish, toothbrush holder, etc., in a well-appointed bedroom.
