World War I encouraged the development of mass production for military purposes. Here, we see women working for the British Munitions Supply Co. Ltd. at Verdun. It should be noted, however, that women were employed in industry long before this in QuΘbec. Women had been working in the textile, clothing, and cigar-making industries, in particular, since the 1870s.
