Here we see a blacksmith with all his tools around him at work in a reconstruction of a nineteenth century smithy. Everything is done by hand; there are no machines. Activity in the smithy takes place at the anvil, on which the blacksmith is working (centre), and at the hearth (right), where he heats the pieces of iron. The direct contact between craftsman and material encouraged the artisan to take great pride in his work pride which was lost as factories and mass production came into being.
