Workers began using strikes to defend their interests as early as the start of the nineteenth century and, in some cases, even earlier. Some of these strikes were spontaneous, while others were organized by trade unions and councils beginning in the 1880s. This illustration from the Canadian Illustrated News (May 13, 1871) presents a humorous reaction to the inconvenience caused by the MontrÄal carters' strike. It should be noted that the carters were the taxi-drivers and truckers of the time.
