Certain working-class neighbourhoods located close to the St. Lawrence River in MontrΘal were often hit by floods during the spring thaw. This is an artist's depiction of a flood in Griffintown as published in the Canadian Illustrated News (April 26, 1873). The unsanitary conditions are obvious -- the presence of rats tells all.
