This photograph,taken in 1912, depicts a group of Galician immigrants leaving the Main Street area of central Winnipeg where the Canadian Pacific and Canadian Northern Railway stations were located. Most European immigrants stayed, at least briefly, in the government immigration sheds. Restrictions on length of stay soon forced them to seek other accommodation, usually with the help of relatives or friends or enterprising ethnic businessmen who specialized in finding accommodations. With their few possessions piled on the wagon, the men and women in this photograph are bound for the North End, by that time the well-established, ethnically heterogeneous, working-class area of the city.
