The tiny intellectual community among the European immigrants brought to Canada ideas which were considered to be very radical during the Great War. This photograph shows the leaders at the second congress (1917) of the Ukrainian Social Democratic Party, a Marxist group. The banner advertising the congress urges that the Proletariat of all countries unite. The Canadian government banned such groups the following year.
