The communal nature of such ceremonies as burying the dead is well illustrated by this photograph of a very large funeral at the church of Saints Vladimir and Olga. This was a Uniate church, that is, Eastern Rite Catholic or "Ruthenian rite" as it was called in 1920 when the photograph was taken. On the right the old priest wears vestments brought from Europe while younger clergymen have adopted North American style dress. The younger women appear to be dressed quite modishly, while the older women cling to the traditional babushka. Assimilation was, of course, very much a generational preoccupation.
