Religion, as well as native language, was considered essential to cultural integrity. As soon as they were able, immigrants began to build churches and synagogues in Winnipeg, usually in stages as funds became available. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church shown in this photograph was begun about 1900. Scrap lumber and tin were the building materials. The church served as a social, as well as a religious centre for the ethnic community. Family events, such as baptisms and funerals, attracted most of the community and helped to consolidate and maintain European traditions.
