Canada now sells wheat and other grains around the world. The value of prairie grain production to everyday life in other countries is demonstrated by this array of bread and macaroni, which includes pita bread (Lebanon), chapati (India), kaiser rolls (Austria), dark rye bread (U.S.S.R.), noodles (Japan) and a variety of pastas (Italy). It is little wonder that bread is described as one of the most universal foods.
Fully half of Canadian sales of agricultural products is provided by wheat alone and a further one-sixth by barley and other grains. Most Canadian wheat about seventy-five percent is exported and, as a result, Canadian production is an important factor in the international market. In recent years, Canada has contributed over one-sixth of world wheat exports.
In the twentieth century, Canada's agricultural exports have gone chiefly to the United Kingdom, the western European nations now in the European Economic Community and the United States. In recent years, especially since 1960, Japan, the U.S.S.R. and the People's Republic of China have also become important markets.
