The impact of the coal mining industry on the larger community can be gained by considering the size of this pier constructed at Saint John for the handling of part of the Dominion Coal Company's production From the harbour of Louisbourg, only a few kilometres south of the major Cape Breton fields, coal was shipped to ports in the Maritimes, the St. Lawrence region and New England, although the latter market was less significant after the 1890s. Huge storage facilities were constructed throughout the Maritimes and the St. Lawrence region; at QuÄbec City and MontrÄal enormous mountains of coal rose throughout the shipping season in anticipation of winter fuel requirements.
