This was one of three prisons built especially for military convicts -- the other two were at QuΘbec City and MontrΘal. There were so many prisoners that the army made arrangements with the colonial government to imprison some soldiers in the Kingston Penitentiary. Most men were detained here for two to four years and carried out such menial tasks as picking oakum and moving cannonballs.
