Under the watchful eye of the warders, the prisoners were forced to carry cannonballs from one pile to the next and then begin over again. It was probably the most frustratingly futile exercise that anyone could have conceived. Prisoners being punished in this way were fed on bread and water, and the occasional potato. This sketch appeared in the Canadian Illustrated News of December 9, 1871.
