The two deserters in the preceding illustration were intercepted by a look-out party and brought back to await court martial and flogging or imprisonment. Preventing desertion and capturing deserters absorbed a significant portion of the army's financial allocations. It cost even more, however, to recruit, train and ship out a replacement for the successful deserter.
