Gymnasiums such as this one in Halifax were first introduced in the 1860s, in a sudden effort to increase the physical fitness of the men and to provide another acceptable outlet for their energy. Instructors were sent out to teach the proper use of the various apparatus and to organize exercise programmes. This engraving by William Ogle Carlisle appeared in the Canadian Illustrated News of April 6, 1872.
