This engraving, based on a rather romantic drawing by British naval officer George Francis Lyon (1795 1832), shows an early nineteenth-century winter village in the central Arctic. Note that the kayaks have been mounted on snow blocks in order to prevent the dogs from devouring the skin coverings.
