This watercolour by John White shows an encounter between Martin Frobisher's men and the sixteenth-century Inuit of southern Baffin Island. Frobisher observed "a number of small things in the sea afarre off" which he supposed were porpoises or seals, until he got closer and "discovered them to be men in small boats made of leather." The English navigator and explorer was struck by one of their iron-tipped arrows.
