The banks of the canal were the birthplace of large-scale manufacturing in Canada. Timber yards, Ogilvie's flour mill, and the smoke stacks of the iron and steel industry are visible in this picture. Secondary manufacturing employed a third of the labour force. Note the working class housing close by the factories and imagine the unhealthy air which permeated those homes.
