The monumental proportions of this pretentious home contrasted sharply with the crowded tenements endured by the working poor. The population density in wealthier areas was significantly lower than that of the zones occupied by Montreal's poor. Hugh Allan was a wealthy financier who, among other ventures, participated in financing the first syndicate attempting to build a railroad across Canada.
