The Montreal Strikes of 1919, (Le Devoir, 16 June 1919).
The run-away inflation of 1914-1918 combined with a post-war atmosphere filled with hope for changes in the economic system to make 1919 the most strike-filled year in Canadian history. The Winnipeg General Strike was still front page news when the employees of Vickers shipbuilding yard went out. By late June, 15,000 workers were on strike in Montreal. Wage increases, the 48-hour week, and union recognition were the main issues. Few companies conceded to these demands.
