The Militia on the Docks, (Montreal Star, 2 May 1903).
1903 was a year of bitter labour strife right across Canada. Inflation was threatening already precarious family finances and employers were mounting a determined attack on unionized labour. When Montreal dockworkers went out on strike for increased wages and recognition of their union, the steamship companies brought in "scab" labour and demanded the calling out of the militia to protect the docks. The use of the militia in labour disputes was a common practice in the early decades of the century.
