Ames, The City Below the Hill with an introduction by Paul Rutherford (University of Toronto Press, 1972) Paperback] provides detailed information on social conditions in Montreal in the mid-1890's. Gabrielle Roy, The Tin Flute (McClelland and Stewart, New Canadian Library) Paperback] is strongly recommended for its insight into social conditions as well as its literary merit. An overview of the history of Montreal can be obtained from John Irwin Cooper, Montreal: A Brief History (McGill-Queens University Press, 1969).
Some of the essays in Marcel Rioux and Yves Martin, French Canadian Society Vol. 1 (McClelland and Stewart, 1968) Paperback], particularly those in Part Two, provide useful background information though none deal specifically with Montreal or the working class. This book has been published in French as La SociΘtΘ canadienne-francaise (HMH 1971)] Paperback.] There now is an excellent bibliography on Quebec working class history: Andre Leblanc and James Thwaites, Le Monde ouvrier au Quebec (Les Presses de l'UniversitΘ du QuΘbec, 1973). Jaques Rouillard, Les travaiIleurs du coton au QuΘbec 1900-1915 (Les Presses de l'UniversitΘ du QuΘbec, 1974) provides good information on the primary textile sector.
