Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe (1752-1806).
Simcoe was Upper Canada's first lieutenant-governor, 1791-1798, but only resided in the province from 1792 to 1796. It was he who planned to make the Forks of the Thames the site for his provincial capital, which he chose to call London. As governor he personally visited the site, directed that Dundas Street be ultimately cut to the Forks and ordered that the tract be purchased from the Chippewa Indians. This oil painting was obtained from the daughters of Governor Simcoe by Isaac Hellmuth, second bishop of the Huron Diocese, and was subsequently given to Huron College.
