"Elliston" (later "Headley"), Southeast Corner of Richmond and Sydenham Streets, ca. 1878.
"Elliston", a large, comfortable, Gothic country villa, with grounds covering a city block, was built by Ellis Walton Hyman, London's leading tanner, who resided here by 1868. Later, he added the tower and Gothic porte-cochere. About 1900, the executors of Hyman's estate sold the mansion to Adam Beck, the father of Ontario Hydro. He renamed the house "Headley" and remodeled it in its present form. This anonymous photograph documents the house's appearance in 1878. Today the property is recognized as an historical and architectural site by the municipal and provincial governments.
