Organized "base-ball" existed in London by 1856. In the late 1860s a great rivalry developed locally between the Guelph and London clubs, and in the early 1870s the Guelph Maple Leafs reigned as the Canadian baseball champions. The Tecumseh Base Ball Club became London's first semi-professional team in 1875 and became a professional team the following year. That year the Tecumsehs became the new Canadian champions and in 1877 won the International Base Ball Association championship. This placard advertises an international championship with the Buckeyes of Columbus, Ohio.
