On October 11, 1910, some 8000 people gathered in Berlin to watch and cheer as Whitney guided Adam Beck's finger to the ceremonial button which turned on "hydro" power for the first time. "We must deliver power,' Beck proclaimed, "to such an extent that the poorest working man will have an electric light in his home. No more oil and gas, soon, I hope, no more coal."
