By the turn of the century, women desiring "respectable" employment had begun to appear as typists and clerks in firms across the country. Very soon they discovered that their wages, like those of nurses and teachers, were often insufficient to maintain a decent standard of living. Although suffragists often sympathized with the plight of such women workers and campaigned for equal pay, they could not reverse the trend toward the restriction of women into low paying occupations.
