A comparison of this painting with the previous one shows the clear relationship between the winter garb of the settler and the native. Two of the Indians are wearing duffle-cloth coats, likely made from English cloth smuggled into the colony from Albany. Smuggling was a flourishing business at Montreal. French silks and wines went south, woolen cloth came north.
