Above is the original Heinze smelter at Trail Landing as it appeared in 1896. The CPR purchased the smelter in 1898 as part of a deal to obtain Heinze's Columbia and Western Railway to Rossland. In 1906 the CPR mine and smelting properties were reorganized as the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company. Below is the Cominco smelter as it appears today, with the modern city of Trail below it.
