This is a photograph of Valleyfield's main thoroughfare, Victoria Street, where the city's principal stores and shops are located. Marie's father does his shopping here. Along the street is a wide wooden sidewalk that enables pedestrians to circulate more freely, especially when it rains. A favourite pastime of the townspeople is to stroll along these sidewalks up and down Victoria Street. In the foreground lies the Beauharnois Canal and the boats that shuttle between Valleyfield and MontrΘal. Although it costs only fifteen cents to take the shuttle to MontrΘal, Marie has never been there.
