The Soo Line was a railroad linking the American Midwest with the Canadian prairies. Advertisements like this poster induced many American farmers and labourers to come to Canada. Some of the harvesters eventually decided to purchase railroad-owned land north of the border. Transportation companies also sponsored 'tours' of Western Canada for newspaper editors. In return for this free excursion the newspapermen were asked to write articles and give lectures extolling the fertility and prosperity of the Canadian prairies.
