This slide shows the tent town established outside Saskatoon in 1903 by the newly arrived Barr Colonists. Many of these British settlers had been attracted to Canada by the patriotic appeals of the Reverend Isaac Barr who, in numerous newspaper advertisements and public lectures, excited the imagination of the British public: "Let us take possession of Canada: Let our Cry be 'Canada for the British'... if you are honest and brave and intend to work hard, if you propose to lead the temperate and strenuous life, then come and cast your lot with us and we will stand together and win". Unfortunately the scheme encountered serious difficulties. Many of the settlers were city-bred 'cockneys' who were unable to wield an axe or cultivate the land. The hardships encountered by the Barr Colonists acted as a deterrent to future British colonization schemes in Canada.
