This booklet cover is typical of the advertising materials prepared for overseas distribution by transportation companies and the Immigration Branch. This one was issued by the Ministry of the Interior and suggested that "the last best West" was in Canada. Prospective settlers were promised 160 acres of land and unlimited opportunities for hunting and fishing. There was no mention of the hazards of settling the untamed west - the swarms of mosquitoes and grasshoppers, the recurring droughts, or the long cold winters.
