Passengers were often called upon to load wood and tolerate unpredictable delays. They also faced certain dangers. Although the early engines which reached a peak speed of 23 m.p.h. in 1860 were not fast enough to risk derailment, fire was a common hazard. The stoves which heated the cars sometimes ignited the upholstery or some other part of the car. Pictured here is such a fire.
