  3.      Il n'existe aucune Ätude exhaustive sur le dÄveloppement minier du Nord de l'Ontario, ni mÉme sur la rÄgion proprement dite. Parmi les Ätudes disponibles, on met plutÖt l'accent sur le dÄveloppement Äconomique que sur la nature des institutions politiques et culturelles ou sur la structure sociale. Les chapitres 7 et 8 de l'ouvrage de Morris Zaslow, The Opening of the Canadian North, 1870-1914 (Toronto, McClelland and Stewart, 1971) donnent une vue gÄnÄrale de l'histoire de la rÄgion, tandis que D.M. LeBourdais dans Metals and Men, The Story of Canadian Mining (Toronto, McClelland and Stewart, 1957) prÄsente une description intÄressante de l'industrie miniÅre. Il y a trÅs peu de documentation sur les diverses rÄgions. Le meilleur ouvrage sur l'industrie du nickel et la ville de Sudbury est certainement de D.M. LeBourdais, Sudbury Basin, The Story of Nickel (Toronto, Ryerson, 1953). Gilbert Stelter dans "The Origins of a Company Town: Sudbury in the Nineteenth Century", Laurentian University Review, (3, avril 1971, p. 3-37), analyse la relation entre la nouvelle communautÄ et l'industrie. Pour les rÄgions de Cobalt et Porcupine, on pourra lire J.B. McDougall, Two Thousand Miles of Gold, from Val d'Or to Yellowknife (Toronto, McClelland and Stewart, 1946) o¥ l'auteur relate ses souvenirs en tant que commissaire d'Äcole pour la rÄgion. Un autre bouquin mais beaucoup plus dÄtaillÄ est de S.A. Pain, The Way North; Men, Mines and Minerals (Toronto, Ryerson, 1964). Il faut aussi mentionner deux articles trÅs intÄressants de L. Carson Brown "Cobalt, The Town with a Silver Lining", Canadian Geographical Journal (juillet 1963) et "The Golden Porcupine", Canadian Geographical Journal (janvier 1967). Ces articles ont ÄtÄ rÄimprimÄs sous forme de brochures et on peut se les procurer au MinistÅre des Mines de l'Ontario ê Toronto. Les Ätudiants dÄsireux d'approfondir le sujet de la rÄgion miniÅre ÄloignÄe, pourront trouver dans Community Development in Northeastern Ontario, A Selected Bibliography (Sudbury, Laurentian University Press, 1972) de Gilbert Stelter et John Rowan une liste complÅte des pÄriodiques et ouvrages de base.
